Through The AShes: MY Family's Story of the 2022 Calf Canyon Hermits Peak Fire
The smell of smoke lingers in my memory like a shadow that refuses to fade. We are coming up on three years since the Calf Canyon Hermits Peak Fire swept through my childhood home, reducing everything I once knew to ash, including Chai, my family's cat. This wasn't just a natural disaster - it was a man-made tragedy, ignited by a controlled burn gone horribly wrong, a mistake by the very government that was supposed to protect us.
Losing our home was just the beginning. The heartbreak of sifting through the ruins was quickly replaced by the frustration of fighting for accountability. Promises were made, but justice has been elusive. The scars left by the fire run deeper than the charred earth; they are etched in every delay, every ignored plea, and every day we spend waiting for restitution. These are the photos I captured of the aftermath of the fire and how we grieved.
